StorTrends Helps Cleveland State University Explore New Horizons in Health Care Education

11/5/2015

NORCROSS, GA: StorTrends®, the data storage division of American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI) and an industry leader in all-flash arrays (AFA), hybrid storage, and spinning disk solutions, is pleased to announce that Cleveland State University Center for Innovation in Medical Professions (CIMP) in Cleveland, Ohio has elected to secure its data with StorTrends.

This fall, Cleveland State University opened the doors to its Center for Innovation in Medical Professions, a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to the study of health care professions in new and innovative ways. Larry Warf, Manager of Technical Services at CSU, was tasked with setting up the infrastructure to support the presidential initiative behind the establishment of this new program and facility.

During this process, it became clear that the incumbent storage vendor was not the right product for the task – primarily due to the lack of desired features at a cost-effective price. This led to the selection of StorTrends from American Megatrends, due to its ability to handle the large amount of data needed for storage and the fact that the StorTrends solution was offered at a competitive price. Speaking about the selection process, Warf said that “The challenge that we faced was finding a unit capable of storing 20 TBs of video and yet cost-effective.”

With the successful implementation of its StorTrends data storage system, CSU's CIMP is changing the way instructors teach and how medical students learn. Faculty can give lectures that are captured in video format and students can review them. Students can perform medical tasks such as- CPR and medical simulations on an intelligent mannequin that records the students’ actions. Video footage from various angles is captured from cameras in the room for instructors to provide feedback.

“We needed a right-sized, standalone system particularly for this project. The product showed up as quick as a flash and everything worked out of the box and it is doing the job," said Enterprise Systems Administrator Bill Brock.

“The StorTrends solutions are ideally suited for high-volume data management operations like Cleveland State University. StorTrends offers the high performance and reliability needed to robustly serve mission critical data, together with excellent cost effectiveness to deliver exceptional ROI,” commented Justin Bagby, Director of the StorTrends Division of American Megatrends.

America’s Auto Auction Switches to Storage Area Network with StorTrends

10/21/2015

NORCROSS, GA: StorTrends®, the data storage division of American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI) and an industry leader in all-flash arrays (AFA), hybrid storage, and spinning disk solutions, is pleased to announce that America’s Auto Auction, headquartered in Dallas, TX and one of the largest providers of pre-owned car auctions in the US, has elected to secure its data with StorTrends.

According to America’s Auto Auction MIS Director Victor Demaria, the first decision was to make the switch from local storage to a Storage Area Network (SAN). America’s Auto Auction then fielded quotes from multiple vendors, including Dell and EMC, before deciding on StorTrends. “In selecting StorTrends, I realized that we could get all of the features the big names offer for half of the price. Plus, AMI has a strong history in technology as an American company - starting all the way back with BIOS. The price, even with all the licenses needed, still came in substantially less than the competition,” said Demaria.

With the addition of StorTrends, Demaria has noticed improved performance in the company's Citrix® XenDesktop™ deployment along with overall employee productivity. Demaria commented that “Thanks to StorTrends, I was able to increase the productivity of my company and still keep the Accounting Department happy.”

Out of the many features that his StorTrends SAN offers, Demaria has taken a particular liking to its failover capability - which helps his department eliminate downtime and assists in the capture of quality backups as well as with data replication. In fact, Demaria and America’s Auto Auction were so satisfied with their StorTrends solution that just a few months after the initial install they decided to purchase a second StorTrends unit.

Aquatech Selects StorTrends to Boost Performance and Productivity

9/22/2015

  • Global Leader in Water Purification Replaces NetApp with StorTrends Storage Area Network (SAN)

NORCROSS, GA: StorTrends®, the data storage division of American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI) and an industry leader in all-flash arrays (AFA), hybrid storage, and spinning disk solutions, is pleased to announce that Aquatech, a global leader in water purification technology headquartered in Canonsburg, Pennsylvania, has boosted its performance and productivity by selecting high performance storage from StorTrends.

Before making the switch to StorTrends, Aquatech deployed a NetApp storage array and experienced frequent latency issues. These issues caused vital applications such as SAP, Exchange server and SQL to underperform. In the words of Aquatech IT Enterprise Architect Brian Fraley, “We were being forced to constantly move things, setting up an old out of date server and juggling everything around. It worked, but we were stuck.”

After collecting metrics through the StorTrends iDATA tool, an analysis of the company’s complete IT environment was conducted by a StorTrends sales engineer, and a Storage Area Network (SAN) from StorTrends was recommended and configured specifically to the company’s needs. Almost immediately, Aquatech noticed significant increases in performance for all of its key applications - including SAP, Exchange, SQL, and VDI - as a direct result of the StorTrends implementation. Aquatech also has incorporated many of the helpful features that are offered with each StorTrends storage appliance such as SSD Caching, SSD Tiering and the Auto Data Tiering capabilities that is a hallmark of StorTrends innovation for keeping the active data on the SSD drives for ultimate performance. Regarding his satisfaction with StorTrends, Fraley summed up his thoughts with these words: “Our end users are more productive and the system is a lot simpler to manage than the previous NetApp system… it now only takes seconds to build a volume, then have it there and ready to go on VMware in less than two minutes.”

“We immediately felt the impact of having a solid backup system in place,” said Nathan Buck, NSM’s Network Manager. “StorTrends has definitely been a ‘set it and forget it’ kind of device. In the past we had disks that would frequently fail. StorTrends provides consistent performance.”

“For organizations like Aquatech, high-performance storage from StorTrends delivers the exceptional performance and functionality necessary to optimize resources, boost productivity, and ensure data protection,” said Justin Bagby, Director of the StorTrends division of American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI). “StorTrends also provides the flexibility to grow any organization’s storage environment as needed, with the high capacity that will meet business and budget requirements well into the future - whether those call for all-flash, hybrid flash, or spinning disk.”

National Seating & Mobility Boosts Performance, Ensures Data Protection and High Availability (HA) with StorTrends High Performance Storage

9/22/2015

  • Custom Mobility, Rehabilitation, and Adaptive Seating Systems Provider deploys StorTrends SANs at Primary and Remote Datacenters to ensure Fast and Accurate Backup and Disaster Recovery (DR)

NORCROSS, GA: StorTrends®, the data storage division of American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI) and an industry leader in all-flash arrays (AFA), hybrid storage, and spinning disk solutions, announced today that National Seating & Mobility (NSM), headquartered in Nashville, Tennessee, has deployed StorTrends high performance storage in order to boost storage performance and ensure data protection, high availability (HA), and disaster recovery (DR).

Prior to implementing the StorTrends’ solution, NSM - which specializes in custom mobility, rehabilitation, and adaptive seating systems for those with physical challenges and disabilities - had experienced frequent disk failures that caused backup windows to run much longer than desired. This was due in part to the tremendous growth of the organization over the past 30 years from five locations to a national network of over 1,000 professional Assistive Technology Providers serving clients, therapists, and physicians across the United States. Of necessity, the IT environment expanded as well to include 75 TB of data, supported by 20 HP and Dell physical servers, 50 Hyper-V™ virtual servers, Dell and Cisco network switches, two Microsoft® SQL Server® databases, 100 MySQL® databases, a custom built Adobe® ColdFusion® based in-house CRM, and a 2010 Microsoft Exchange™ server with 1,000 users all running in a Windows® 7 and 8.1 environment.

With this data growth, NSM knew that its previous solution - a homegrown storage area network (SAN) consisting of multiple older disks for backup - would not suffice long-term. After researching various options, the IT department selected StorTrends high performance storage. StorTrends’ compatibility with Veeam® software for onsite production data backup combined with high-speed replication capabilities to an offsite disaster recovery (DR) site were among its many selling points. This NSM took advantage of immediately by deploying a dual controller StorTrends SAN at its primary datacenter in Chattanooga with a mirror StorTrends SAN in Nashville to ensure fast and accurate backup and DR.

“We immediately felt the impact of having a solid backup system in place,” said Nathan Buck, NSM’s Network Manager. “StorTrends has definitely been a ‘set it and forget it’ kind of device. In the past we had disks that would frequently fail. StorTrends provides consistent performance.”

Buck cited additional benefits to using the new solution as well, including the fact that the StorTrends’ device is multi-purpose. While NSM is currently using it for a backup to disk solution, the organization could use it in the future as traditional SAN, or to run it alongside its existing backup system. Buck also credited StorAid™, the StorTrends technical support division, as part of the success of the solution. “The service and support experience has gone extremely well,” explained Buck. “Any time questions arise, they are there to answer our questions quickly and accurately.”

“The StorTrends solutions are a perfect fit for the tiered data management structures in today’s enterprises, as NSM quickly discovered,” said Justin Bagby, Director of StorTrends. “These solutions offer management ease, with the high performance and reliability required to serve mission critical data. Moreover, StorTrends is the right solution for the future, giving National Seating & Mobility the flexibility to grow their storage environment how and when they need to – whether its all-flash, hybrid flash or spinning disk, based on their own application and budgetary requirements.”

About National Seating & Mobility:
National Seating & Mobility clients are often severely physically challenged. The majority are pediatrics with diagnoses of birth defects, Cerebral Palsy, Muscular Dystrophy, and Spina Bifida. NSM also serves teens, adults, and seniors challenged with severe trauma, disease, and skeletal disorders. Mighty Auto Parts Supercharges its Datacenter with High Performance Storage from StorTrends

9/15/2015

  • Auto Parts Distributor Mighty Auto Parts Solves Capacity Issues and Prepares for Future Growth with the Help of StorTrends

NORCROSS, GA: StorTrends®, the data storage division of American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI) and an industry leader in all-flash arrays (AFA), hybrid storage, and spinning disk solutions, today announced that Mighty Auto Parts, headquartered in Norcross, Georgia, has increased storage capacity in its data center and is now prepared to handle future data growth after switching to high performance storage from StorTrends.

Prior to implementing a solution from StorTrends, Mighty Auto Parts - with 114 locations and partnered with approximately 12,000 repair facilities nationwide - had reached its maximum data storage capacity and required frequent disk cleanup efforts to maintain the system. Director of IT Mark Spruill and Network Administrator Susan Dunson began to notice that individual file storage was consuming much of the company’s bulk storage and the backup process was becoming more difficult.

With a complex IT environment consisting of 10 servers, over 20 virtual servers, network switches, 10 databases and a mail server supporting 50 users with over 100 mailboxes, the sheer volume of spreadsheets, documents, pictures, videos and presentations made the file system uncontained and unmanageable with the Direct Attached Storage (DAS) system and HP storage server in use at the time.

The StorTrends Team arranged for Mighty Auto Parts to test the StorTrends solution in their IT environment for 30 days, quickly convincing Spruill and the department of both its performance and value. Spruill commented that “The cost and value were ideal, and StorTrends put its money where its mouth was and gave us a 30-day demo of the box. After the 30 days there was no way I was giving it back.”

The original purpose of the StorTrends storage system provided to Mighty Auto Parts was simply for bulk data storage, but its flexibility also gave the IT Department the option to expand and replicate its data to another off-site location in the future. Spruill added that “A lot of the other solutions we looked at only did backup or were storage-only or were geared towards large enterprise companies; StorTrends did everything. StorTrends is the perfect small to medium-sized business solution. A lot of companies will say they have solutions for small to medium-sized corporations but they are not priced in medium-sized dollars.”

For her part, Dunson added that the outstanding technical support that Mighty Auto Parts has received is a vital part of the organization’s overall satisfaction with StorTrends. “The StorTrends technical support representatives keep great case notes and are professional, courteous and knowledgeable,” she said. Spruill added that “The StorTrends solution is performing as promised and we keep finding more and more useful things we can do with this technology.”

“For organizations like Mighty Auto Parts, StorTrends high-performance storage delivers the exceptional performance and functionality necessary to optimize resources, boost productivity, and ensure data protection,” said Justin Bagby, Director of the StorTrends Division of American Megatrends. “Additionally, StorTrends provides the flexibility to grow any organization’s storage environment as needed, with the high capacity that will meet business and budget requirements well into the future - whether those call for all-flash, hybrid flash, or spinning disk.”

FSG Bank Increases IOPS Speed Five Times over Previous Backup System with StorTrends High Performance Storage

8/25/2015

  • Leading Banking and Financial Institution Switches to StorTrends for Ease of Management, Data Protection and Asset Optimization

NORCROSS, GA: StorTrends®, the data storage division of American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI) and an industry leader in all-flash arrays (AFA), hybrid storage, and spinning disk solutions, today announced that its customer FSG Bank, headquartered in Chattanooga, Tennessee, reported a five time increase in IOPS speed in comparison to its previous backup system after switching to StorTrends high performance storage.

Prior to implementing the StorTrends solution, FSG Bank — whose approximately 300 employees serve the banking and financial needs of communities in Tennessee and northern Georgia — struggled to efficiently maintain its existing storage resources. The bank had recently realized a substantial increase in profits, with nearly $50 million in loan growth and over $1 million of improvement in non-interest expense. For the IT department, charged with supporting the bank’s internal IT requirements as well as maintaining all customer support systems, this success created even greater data storage challenges.

With a complex IT environment consisting of 70 servers, the majority of which are virtual, Juniper network switches, a myriad of databases, a Zimbra mail server and various banking software, FSG Bank needed to rely on outsourcing the core of its work. The operation was just getting by on a 20 TB storage area network (SAN), with a secondary unit in a disaster recovery (DR) site for failover.

Needing more flexibility and control over the environment, the IT department compared various systems and chose StorTrends based on the product’s capability, price, and support plan. In terms of capability, the data-tiering provided by StorTrends allowed the organization to implement three tiers of storage and avoid overburdening its storage resources. Tier I was used to support the bank’s mission-critical data (accessed hourly and daily), Tier II was employed to manage frequently-accessed but non-priority data, and Tier III was used to serve its backup and archiving processes.

“The primary production datastore and most of the VMs were strategically migrated over to the StorTrends solution as quickly as possible and the results were immediate,” said Kevin Turner, Systems Administrator, FSG Bank. “The speed is definitely impressive. Our IOPS are almost five times faster than the previous solution.”

Turner also highlighted that the outstanding technical support has been key to the bank’s high satisfaction with StorTrends. “With StorTrends, the support agents know the product inside-out,” said Turner. “The representatives go above and beyond the call of duty and show a total commitment to getting things fixed. We’ve seen firsthand that an excellent product, at an affordable cost, with great technical support is just the StorTrends way of doing business.”

“For organizations like FSG Bank, StorTrends high-performance storage delivers the exceptional performance and functionality necessary to optimize resources, boost productivity, and ensure data protection,” said Justin Bagby, Director of the StorTrends division of American Megatrends. “What’s more, StorTrends provides the flexibility to grow any organization’s storage environment as needed, with the high capacity that will meet business and budget requirements well into the future - whether those call for all-flash, hybrid flash, or spinning disk.”

StorTrends Granted Three U.S. Patents That Set New Performance Standard for All-Flash Storage

8/17/2015

NORCROSS, GAStorTrends®, the data storage division of American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI) and an industry leader in all-flash arrays (AFA), hybrid storage, and spinning disk solutions, today announced that it has been granted three U.S. Patents as the company continues to establish a new era of performance storage with proven value. The patents set the highest standard to date for how companies can meet the requirements of the most performance-intensive applications, at the most affordable price-point in the industry.

AMI was granted U.S. Patent No. 8,954,339 on Data Deduplication for Information Storage Systems, which was filed on April 18, 2012. This awarded patent covers the means to have deduplication run at optimal and efficient space-saving levels. Specifically, it optimizes the amount of system RAM space used in the system to reduce (or dedupe) terabytes worth of data without affecting performance. In terms of customer benefit, this greatly reduces the amount of SSD capacity that a company is required to purchase within the SAN while also delivering the lowest latency in the industry to significantly increase value and response times within an IT environment.

“Deduplication and compression have become critical features for all-flash storage arrays,” said Sukha Ghosh, Vice President of Engineering for the StorTrends Data Storage Division. “Without deduplication and compression, the SSDs are too small from a capacity perspective, and they are still too expensive to scale out for many customers. StorTrends has worked extremely hard to implement the industry’s best deduplication and compression engine within StorTrends’ All-Flash Array family.”

AMI was granted the second patent — U.S. Patent No. 8,812,811 on Data Migration between Multiple Tiers in a Storage System — which was filed on August 10, 2012. This awarded patent covers the means that StorTrends utilizes to efficiently analyze blocks of data and move the individual blocks among different tiers of storage. Customers lower their costs significantly from StorTrends taking the highly accessed blocks of data in the environment and putting only those blocks into the expensive drive SSD tiers, while the less frequently accessed blocks occupy only the lower, less expensive tier of the storage array.

“Data tiering has been around for many years and there are several ways to migrate data between different storage tiers. The new patented process is an important advancement for both the StorTrends Hybrid Array and the StorTrends All-Flash Array. This patented process has been designed to intelligently watch and track blocks of data, and it can even predict when data blocks need to be moved into or out of the hot tier based on access patterns,” said Justin Bagby, Director of the StorTrends Data Storage Division. “This very unique and efficient algorithm can also be further fine-tuned by the customer for faster promotion and demotion of the blocks of data based on the customer’s specific data loads and data type, providing for true quality of service.”

AMI was granted the third patent—Patent No. 8,711,851 on Multi-Protocol Data Transfers — which was filed on July 18, 2008. This patent covers the means that StorTrends uses to maximize the reliability of transmission control protocol and the performance of user datagram protocol to ensure that StorTrends’ replication is the fastest in the industry. This decreases replication management and increases the possible recovery point objective (RPO) for a customer by giving more available bandwidth for the blocks that need to go to their disaster recovery (DR) location. StorTrends also incorporates periodicity, which allows the customer to set the priority bandwidth for the replication of the data and avoid bogging down the network during peak business hours. The Wide-Area Data Services (WDS) technology suite includes data deduplication, compression, encryption, and WAN optimization. This technology ensures that the primary site stays in-sync with the secondary site, allowing for increased RPO and recovery time objective.

“The ability to keep a disaster recovery or backup site in sync with the primary data infrastructure is critical,” said Bagby. “We have found that a large majority of IT environments are not in-sync and if a disaster occurs in the primary environment, the chances of the data being in-sync and on the secondary or DR site is low. AMI recognized this as a serious problem, and in response developed its industry-leading WDS replication technology suite that helps shorten the vulnerability window for StorTrends customers.”

7/10/2015

  • StorTrends 3600i All-Flash Array Recognized for High Performance All-Flash Storage at the Most Affordable Price Point in the Industry

NORCROSS, GAStorTrends®, the data storage division of American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI) and an industry leader in all-flash arrays (AFA), hybrid storage, and spinning disk solutions, today announced that its StorTrends 3600i all-flash array (AFA) has received a Computer Technology Review Most Valuable Product (MVP) 2015 Award. Rigorously reviewed by the esteemed Computer Technology Review (CTR) editorial team across criteria that included product innovation, functionality and affordability, the StorTrends 3600i all-flash array stood out for its ability to unfailingly meet the requirements of the most performance-intensive applications, at the most affordable price-point in the industry.

Additionally, unlike any other flash storage vendor, StorTrends optimizes its all-flash arrays to suit the specific requirements of each environment via its patented StorTrends iDATA tool and StorTrends Dedupe tool. The StorTrends iDATA tool assesses each user’s unique storage requirements across such areas as performance, capacity utilization, IOPS, read vs. writes, network bandwidth, server statistics, etc. The StorTrends Dedupe tool runs on an existing database and will calculate the amount of data that can be deduped and compressed within the customers environment.

“After a careful review, we have identified a select group of innovative technology solutions that represent the standout leaders in their respective categories – solutions which we think should be at the top of every IT professional’s evaluation shortlist,” said Kim Kay, Associate Publisher & Editor-in-Chief, WestWorldWide, LLC, publishers of Computer Technology Review and IT Security Journal. “We congratulate StorTrends as a 2015 CTR MVP Award winner.”

"As CTR states in its StorTrends 3600i MVP Award description, ‘Until the StorTrends 3600i, the vast majority of customers have been shy of all-flash storage primarily due to cost’,” said Justin Bagby, Director of the StorTrends division of American Megatrends. “However, as the MVP Award narrative continues to explain, based on the StorTrends 3600i’s pioneering features and functionality, its ability to meet the highest performance requirements, and its highly affordable price -- all backed by a service organization that is second to none, we indisputably secured this year’s MVP Award.” He continued, “We are indeed honored for this notable and highly coveted acknowledgment.”

Advanced Motors & Drives (AMD) Safeguards Continued Growth and Evolving Product Line with StorTrends High Performance

7/6/2015

  • Premier Designer and Manufacturer of Customized Motors for Battery-Powered Vehicles Replaces Tape-Based Backup with StorTrends Storage Area Network (SAN)

NORCROSS, GA: StorTrends® the world’s proven leader in all-flash arrays (AFA), hybrid storage, and spinning disk solutions, today announced that Advanced Motors and Drives (AMD), a premier designer and manufacturer of customized motors for battery-powered vehicles, has deployed a StorTrends high-performance storage area network (SAN) across its primary and remote backup datacenters to support its continued growth and evolving product line.

In addition to serving industrial, recreational and utility vehicle manufacturers, AMD is also on the cutting edge of clean “green” motor manufacturing. Staffed by a team of hundreds of designers, engineers, IT professionals and administrative staff, its upstate New York design and manufacturing facilities are supported by primary and remote datacenters. These datacenters utilize a wide range of enterprise applications, across a heterogeneous infrastructure made up of Red Hat® Linux® servers, a BlackBerry® Enterprise server, and various IBM servers. In addition, AMD relies on Windows®-compatible Samba to help support and manage its end user desktop, laptop and printer environment. Until the StorTrends SAN deployment, AMD had relied almost exclusively on tape-based backup. However, as AMD continued to grow it recognized that not only was tape backup a resource draining process, they also faced the risk that if they should experience an outage or disaster event, their information and applications would be unavailable for an unacceptable period of time - if not lost forever.

“The tape backup approach became a bottleneck, so we created a rotating schedule to backup different applications on different days. But this led to periods of time when no backups existed for some apps,” explained Tom Flood, IT Manager at Advanced Motors and Drives.

To augment, disk-based backup was also used but not moved to a safe location until the tape backup was moved. Restoration was complicated and time consuming, and consequently avoided whenever possible. As this was not a long-term tenable solution, given the company’s rapid growth and business criticality of applications and information, Flood began the search for a technologically viable solution, which would also meet its stringent budget requirements. After a careful review of available solutions, and a successfully executed performance proof of concept (POC), Flood chose and deployed a StorTrends high performance SAN across its primary and remote datacenters.

“StorTrends, with its easy and intuitive GUI, makes SAN deployment and management really simple – we had it up and running in about 15 minutes,” said Flood. “You don’t need a special degree to create volumes in StorTrends. It’s completed in just a few clicks. And, with a few more clicks, you’ve got that same volume replicated safely offsite.”

AMD now has six thin provisioned volumes, since StorTrends allows for both thin and exact provisioning, for a total capacity of over 3.5 terabytes (TB). Each StorTrends has useable 11 TB capacity, including a hot spare drive. Data is now consistently replicated every day, with the StorTrends Snap-Assisted Replication (SAR) feature. With StorTrends SAR, an original point-in-time copy of data is first replicated; after that, only changed data is captured and replicated in order to expedite the backup process, reduce performance overhead, and eliminate backup storage redundancy.

“Whereas previously backup was a tedious chore that was time intensive, expensive, and less than reliable, StorTrends has provided AMD with a high performance solution for fast and consistent data backup, at a dramatically lower cost. For instance, a directory of thousands of product drawings in PDF format now takes just a couple seconds to be fully backed up – with future backups consisting of only the changes to these files,” said Justin Bagby, Director of the StorTrends division of American Megatrends (AMI). “Moreover, StorTrends has provided AMD with the flexibility to grow its storage environment how and when it needs to, whether they require all-flash, hybrid flash or spinning disk to support their application and budgetary requirements.”
