The History of Storage Products & StorTrends from American Megatrends

AMI Company Mission

Reliability is something you constantly search for when purchasing products for your business. No one wants to purchase a product that doesn't last. American Megatrends, Inc. (AMI) makes this search simple by providing customers with the best products every single time. This is highlighted by the company's mission statement "Providing our customers with the highest quality products - the first time, every time" While this statement is simple, it is imperative. Tony Maynard from Charlotte Radiology (a customer of the StorTrends division of AMI) states, "I cannot stress enough how good the customer service is. The StorTrends team has done nothing but accommodate our needs and bend over backwards for us. Everything has performed as they described and I have never had the feeling of being over-promised or under-delivered." These types of statements are the reason AMI continues to work hard to deliver customers with the best solutions on the market. Discovering and implementing the most technologically advanced, reliable products can be a hassle; and AMI makes every effort to simplify that process.

AMI Background

AMI was established in 1985 in Norcross, Georgia, and originally specialized in motherboard technologies. In fact, the first product engineered by AMI was a cache-based motherboard developed for PC Limited, now known as Dell, Inc. As AMI grew, the products developed by the company also expanded. AMI quickly became a leader in a number of computing technologies including BIOS, RAID, data storage, and VDI. With over 400 patents, and products in nearly half of computers worldwide, AMI is recognized as a leader in the technology industry.

AMI's Storage History

American Megatrends, Inc. is most well-known for its BIOS firmware (AMIBIOS), as well as their MegaRAID storage controller card. This controller card is where AMI's footprint in storage began. MegaRAID was created in the early 1990's, and by 1993 the card had been adopted by OEMs such as Dell and HP. By 1995, MegaRAID was the largest third-party RAID controller manufacturer in the world.

With AMI's growing reputation as a storage provider, AMI sold its RAID assets, including the MegaRAID line, to LSI Logic in 2001. The sale enabled AMI to expand and develop its StorTrends line of data storage solutions. In 2004, the engineering team that created the MegaRAID controller began developing the StorTrends product line.

In 2004, StorTrends released their first storage unit, the 3000i. This was a 3U rack-mount storage array that offered both NAS, file, and SAN, block, storage. As technology advanced, StorTrends released the 3400i dual controller spinning-disk SAN in 2011. This was a 3U, 16-Bay appliance that could expand up to 256 TB. Shortly after the 3400i was released, the 3500i SSD Hybrid SAN array was brought to market. This unit was released in 2012, and incorporated a mixture of HDDs and SSDs. This unit was the first hybrid system with both SSD Caching and SSD Tiering in the same array. With SSDs ability to increase performance, the IOPS count increased from about 5,000 IOPS on the 3400i spinning disk unit to nearly 200,000 IOPS on the 3500i Hybrid array.

Following the Hybrid unit was the release of StorTrends' first all-flash array, the 3610i. Released in 2015, this array was a 3U, 16-bay unit that supported both deduplication and compression. The second generation of all-flash storage from StorTrends was released in 2016, and was dubbed the 2610i All-Flash Array to reflect the 2U, 24-bay unit that achieves up to 250,000 IOPS.

Today, StorTrends offers 1gb and 10gb iSCSI Spinning Disk, Hybrid, and All-Flash storage units at an aggressive price point. The devices are shipped with all-inclusive feature sets that include technologies such as deduplication, compression, data tiering, replication, snapshots and more. The units are engineered for deployment in a number of industries including, but not limited to, government, engineering, education, and healthcare.
